Dark Star, Bethany Frenett

Dark Star (Dark Star, #1)
Book: Dark Star
Author: Bethany Frenett Her Site
Series: Dark Star (#1)
Genre: Fantasy/YA Fiction
Rating: 5/5
Moral: 5/5

Audrey Whitticomb has nothing to fear. Her mother is the superhero Morning Star, the most deadly crime-fighter in the Twin Cities, so it's hard for Audrey not to feel safe. That is, until she's lured into the sweet night air by something human and not human--something with talons and teeth, and a wide, scarlet smile. Now Audrey knows the truth: her mom doesn't fight crime at night. She fights Harrowers--livid, merciless beings who were trapped Beneath eons ago. Yet some have managed to escape. And they want Audrey dead, just because of who she is: one of the Kin. To survive, Audrey will need to sharpen the powers she has always had. When she gets close to someone, dark corners of the person's memories become her own, and she sometimes even glimpses the future. If Audrey could only get close to Patrick Tigue, a powerful Harrower masquerading as human, she could use her Knowing to discover the Harrowers' next move. But Leon, her mother's bossy, infuriatingly attractive sidekick, has other ideas. Lately, he won't let Audrey out of his sight. When an unthinkable betrayal puts Minneapolis in terrible danger, Audrey discovers a wild, untamed power within herself. It may be the key to saving her herself, her family, and her city. Or it may be the force that destroys everything--and everyone--she loves.

Ehem, I am in love! Audrey Whitticomb is the best heroine I have ever met, plus the book was epic!

The plot:
Fast paced, humorous and mysterious. All the things I ask for in a book. I found myself laughing throughout the entire story, Bethany sure has some wit. There was blurred action that was interesting and exciting. Plus, a whole bunch of creepy monsters that attacked in the shadows. There were some crazy twists I never saw coming!

The characters:
So as I said, Audrey was awesome! She was humble and fierce  plus she was funny. Than you have this amazing mother daughter relationship between her and her mom, Lucy. Leon, the Guardian, was intense. He was over protective, but as I continued reading I came to love him. Also, Audrey's two best friends, Tink and Gideon. The cast is huge, and unique. I loved them all!

The Setting:
It wasn't really a big deal in the story. Yeah, they were in the city. It didn't really make a difference since the story was mainly focused on the characters and plot.

The Standout:
Audrey's relationship with her mother was my favorite part. It was full of love and questioning, and the two really grew together. Audrey's mother was over protective, but only because of what happened to her husband (it's a secret).  She kept major secrets from Audrey, which added the family feuds. Getting past that, Audrey's love for her mother really grew as she came to appreciate her. Learning about Lucy was like reading a whole other story. I absolutely adored those two!

The Moral:
Definitely R. Mae approved! The story was great and the moral (read above) was realistic and easy to relate to. There wasn't sex or lots of swearing. It was very good.
